LESSON 36 ~ 11TH OCTOBER, 2026
*TOPIC: HELL AS THE DESTINATION OF THE FINALLY IMPENITENT*
*TEXTS:* Luke 16:19-31; Mark 9:42-49.
*MEMORY VERSE:* II Peter 2:4, “For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivers them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment…”
*LESSON OBJECTIVES:* At the end of this lesson, participants should be able to:
1. Define hell.
2. State the origin of hell fire.
3. State the descriptions of hell.
4. Enumerate the qualities of those that will go there.
*INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:* The Holy Bible, Sunday School manual, and pictures and videos showing the great judgment day and the wicked cast into hell.
*INTRODUCTION*
To all things created by God, there is an opposite side. In the same vein, talking about heaven without talking about hell makes the lesson incomplete, for hell is the opposite of heaven. From the study about Satan, we found out that hell or the lake of fire is his final destination. The angels who sinned alongside him are also waiting for their judgment. The Bible also teaches that the wicked who finally reject Christ will be turned into hell. Thus, hell is a reality, an awful fact to be realized.
*SUBJECT MATTER*
*Meaning of Hell*
Hell is simply a state of banishment from the presence of God – II Thessalonians 1:8-9. It is a place of torment, suffering and punishment – Luke 16:23.
There are various terms used in the description of hell. In the original languages, three terms are used: (1) Sheol, (2) Hades, and (3) Gehenna. However, English translations have rendered these words as hell, pit, grave, and so on, sometimes losing the force of the original text. This gives Jehovah's Witnesses and others a loophole to say that hell is merely a grave.
*The Origin of Hell*
Originally, hell was a prepared place for the devil and his wicked angels – Matthew 25:41. Hell was never intended for man, except that man insists on going there by rejecting Christ. Because many people have insisted on going to hell, hell has enlarged itself – Isaiah 5:14; Proverbs 27:20.
*Descriptions of Hell*
1. *Hell is a place of eternal punishment* – Matthew 25:46.
2. *It is a place of everlasting torment* – Luke 16:23.
3. *It is a place burning with unquenchable fire* – Matthew 13:42, 50; Revelation 20:15.
4. *It is a place of undying worms* – Mark 9:44-48.
5. *It is a place of self-consciousness* – Luke 16:23.
6. *It is a place of unanswerable prayers* – Luke 16:19-31.
7. *It is a place of many unfulfilled desires* – Luke 16:24-27.
*Qualities of Those Who Will Be in Hell*
The Bible identifies the following categories of people who will face eternal punishment:
1. *Those who deal wickedly* – Psalms 9:17.
2. *The guilty* – John 9:41.
3. *The unbelievers* – John 3:36; 8:24.
4. *The unrighteous* – Matthew 25:46.
5. *The unprofitable and fruitless Christians* – Matthew 25:30.
6. *Backsliders* – Hebrews 10:38-39.
7. *The condemned* – John 3:17-19.
8. *The unsaved* – Hebrews 2:3.
*APPLICATION*
The Bible teaches that hell is the eternal destination of the finally impenitent. Hell is described as eternal separation from God, a place of suffering, anguish and eternal punishment – Revelation 20:14-15.
However, the Bible warns of the reality of hell to encourage repentance, faith in Jesus Christ and the maintenance of holiness in this perverse generation.
As believers, we must take the warning of God's Word seriously and examine our lives to ensure that we are walking in obedience to Him.
*Practical ways to avoid hell include:*
1. *Repent genuinely from all sins* and turn away from unrighteousness – Acts 3:19.
2. *Accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour* and believe in Him for salvation – John 3:16-18.
3. *Be regenerated* by experiencing the new birth through the power of the Holy Spirit – John 3:3-7.
4. *Live a holy and righteous life* in obedience to God's Word – Hebrews 12:14.
5. *Remain faithful to Christ* and avoid returning to a life of sin – Hebrews 10:38-39.
6. *Maintain a personal relationship with God* through prayer, Bible study and fellowship with other believers – Acts 2:42.
7. *Persevere in the faith* and remain watchful until the end – Matthew 24:13.
The reality of hell should not drive us into hopelessness but should awaken us to the urgency of repentance, salvation and holy living.
*EVALUATION*
1. Define hell.
2. State the origin of hell fire.
3. State five descriptions of hell.
4. Enumerate five qualities of those that will go to hell.
*CONCLUSION*
How does one get to hell? By neglecting salvation and choosing destruction, by choosing darkness in the place of light, and by submitting to self-will against the divine will of God – Hebrews 2:3; Romans 10:1-3.
How does one avoid hell fire? By receiving Jesus as a personal Lord and Saviour – Acts 16:30-31, and by accepting and receiving the true way of life in Christ Jesus – John 3:14.
The reality of hell is a solemn warning to everyone. Today is the day of salvation, and now is the accepted time to repent and turn to God.
